During these epidemics, individuals were contracted by the cities themselves to treat, study, and attempt to stop this raging bacterial plague, regardless of the patients’ regardless of individual income. Donned with elongated masks, wide-brim hats, leather coats, and canes, these physicians were both praised and criticized for their bravery and methods in those trying times. These were the Plague Doctors.
